I once read somewhere that 2001: A Space Odyssey is the purest definition of cinema. Here, you have a work that operates solely with image and sound: the true essence of audiovisual. I’ve watched 2001 several times in my life, and it’s amazing how one can have a different thought with each new viewing.
This is largely due to the collaborative work between Kubrick and Clarke, as the screenplay and the book were written simultaneously. If you’re familiar with Kubrick’s work, you know that he’s a provocative director who enjoys tackling complex themes. 2001: A Space Odyssey may very well be the greatest film of his career.
Released in 1968, the film tells the story of a crew of astronauts traveling to Jupiter to investigate a mysterious monolith. The computer HAL 9000, which controls the ship, makes an error but refuses to admit it. To cover up the mistake, HAL starts eliminating the crew members.
I confess that it’s difficult to define exactly what 2001: A Space Odyssey means, as the range of themes explored is immense. The film addresses human evolution, artificial intelligence, the impact of technology, and the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
Kubrick chooses to adopt a language with few dialogues, allowing the image to speak for itself. This may bother some people, who find the film slow and confusing. I confess that 2001 is not an easy experience, but if you make an effort to understand its meaning, I guarantee it will be a unique experience.
Clarke even mentioned that if you understood 2001: A Space Odyssey on the first viewing, the film failed. This philosophical language is intentional. I dare say that every moment of 2001 is memorable: from the soundtrack to iconic phrases and scenes. Kubrick’s choice to use classical music, such as Also Sprach Zarathustra and The Blue Danube, gives the work a surreal tone. Without a doubt, 2001: A Space Odyssey has the best direction of Kubrick’s career.
It is an extremely influential film for the genre, certainly a pillar of science fiction.
THE PUREST DEFINATION OF CINEMA.
